Chapter 13 “Underland Without the Queen”

Now that the Queen has died I don’t know what’ll happen to the Underland. The big red light has appeared which I think it might be Aslan’s sign, but I’m not sure. And cryings, screams of Earthmen are strange, looks like they are afraid of the light. Rilian is assuming the light might be a fire, but I don’t agree with that. It should be something bigger than just fire, maybe Aslan’s guiding. I’m happy for Rilian feeling excitement and enjoyment running away from the Underland, he’s finally feeling some freedom after 10 years. And I’m just hoping that they’d get out of the Underland safely. I’m so ready to finish this book.

Comprehension Questions:

  1. What theory did Puddleglum have about the strange events in Underworld?
  • He said that in his theory “That Witch has laid a train of magic spells so that whenever she was killed, at that same moment her whole kingdom would fall to pieces. She’s the sort that wouldn’t so much mind dying herself if she knew that the chap who killed her was going to be burned, or buried, or drowned five minutes later.”

2. Why didn’t the Prince want to put on his armor? What happened to his shield? What did he think it meant?

  • He didn’t want to wear it because he doesn’t like the look of those. And it’s like a movable dungeon, and it stinks of magic and slavery.
  • The shield had turned bright as silver, and on it, redder than blood or cherries, was the figure of the Lion.
  • He thought this signifies that Aslan will be our good lord, whether he means us to live or die.

3. How does Jill’s attitude toward the horses show about her courage and character?

  • Jill, who had been so cowardly about going through a black hole between one cave and another, went in without fear between the stamping and snorting beasts, and she and the Prince had them saddled and bridled in a few minutes.
  • With a horse, she got more strong and brave.
